Atopic dermatitis is caused by a lack of ceramides in the skin. Ceramides act as the cement of the skin, keeping it firm and together. A lack of ceramides reduces the skin's defense function and can cause itching, redness, dryness and inflammation.

Itching, especially in newborns and babies, causes them to scratch and cause wounds. Wounds also facilitate the appearance of infections, which in turn cause a worsening of inflammation, which aggravates dryness and itching. This creates a vicious circle that must be interrupted.

Apply to affected areas as often as necessary.

The Spanish Pediatric Association offers the following tips to prevent and treat atopic dermatitis:

- Avoid very long baths. They should not last more than 5-10 minutes.

- Use a paraffin or oatmeal soap.

- Use bath oils that can be added to water. Apply to damp skin after bathing.

- Apply moisturizer. It is very important to keep your skin well hydrated.

- Avoid wool and fibre clothing. It is preferable to use cotton clothing and avoid tight clothing. Do not overdress the baby.

- Keep your little one's nails short and clean to avoid infections if he or she scratches himself or herself.
