Hypericum is a shrub plant of European origin from the Hypericaceae family, the most abundant species in this family.
Its name comes from the property attributed to this herb of making evil spirits and apparitions flee. Flowers used to be hung over religious icons on St. John's Day.
The active part of this shrub is the flowering tops, which contain naphthodianthrones, mainly hypericin, pseudohypericin and isohypericin, the first being the most active, and of which it is standardized. It also contains flavonoids, bisflavones, caffeic acid derivatives, proanthocyanidols, phytosterols, hyperforin and coumarins, among others.
